YOUR

ROADS

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO LEAD

This knowledge site is dedicated to helping Ohio’s roadway managers excel with sustainability and lean process through single pass, cold in-place recycling (partial depth) road maintenance.

What is Cold In-Place Recycling?

Single-Pass Cold In-Place (or In-Situ) Recycling is a road rehabilitation methodology that recycles the existing asphalt overlay and base into a homogenous mix, adds emulsion and, if required, cement and water; in a single pass of the machine. This is then compacted as the new asphalt base, is drivable immediately and is covered with an appropriate overlay or surface wearing course. CIR has been used by agencies effectively since the 1970s in the United States and since the 1990s in Ohio.

Discover The Benefits

Lean. Zero truck traffic hauling out the old asphalt base or hauling in new asphalt base means less truck wear on roadways, leaner logistics, less disruption for residents and longer road life

Sustainable. 100% reuse of existing asphalt base materials means much less stress on aggregate reserves and eliminated GHG emissions for transporting the old asphalt base or bringing in the new asphalt base

Learn How and When to Use Single Pass CIR

If your only methods are the traditional mill/fill and full depth reclamation, you have opportunity to lower the cost of your road’s total life. Single pass CIR deserves a look for your roads in the middle to end of the life cycle. It can help you lengthen asset life longer than a 3” mill/fill and avoid the cost of a full depth reclamation.

Carbon Neutral Road Maintenance Is Here

Carbon neutral road construction is inexpensive and within reach when single pass cold in-place recycling is used for the rehabilitation. High quality, additive carbon offset credits can make your next road rehabilitation project carbon neutral.

Tools to Start Your CIR Project

If you decide to adjust your pavement management program to include CIR, then it’s time to identify candidates, design a bid, conduct testing, update financials and publish your bid.
